Kadali Vana — The Grove With No Heart
Story (कथा)
The Story
On the slopes of Gandhamadana, deep in a forest of banana trees, Bhima went looking for a flower.
He found a monkey instead.
Old, half-asleep, tail stretched carelessly across the path. Move it yourself, the creature said. I am too tired.
Bhima — strongest of the Pandavas, breaker of armies — bent down to lift a tail.
And could not.
He pulled. He strained. The forest stayed silent. And somewhere in that silence, the strongest man alive understood that he had never been the strongest at all.
The monkey was Hanuman. His brother, by the same wind.
The Tree That Keeps the Secret
The kadali knows something about this.
Cut open a banana trunk and you will not find wood. No core, no heartwood, nothing solid at the centre — only sheath folded over sheath over sheath, all the way in. A tree with no heart, standing perfectly upright.
It fruits once. Then it dies. But before it dies it puts out a sucker at its own root, and the grove continues.
This is why Hanuman is said to still live in the kadali vana — the chiranjivi, the one who does not end, in the forest of the plant that gives everything away and returns anyway.
What You Wear
Illustrated by mythologist and artist Devdutt Pattanaik, the print rises from the hem like a grove closing in — trunks at the base, fronds arching overhead, layer upon layer of leaves in the same logic as the trunk itself. Look long enough and the leaves stop reading as leaves.
There is no clearing in it. That is deliberate. The grove is not a backdrop; it is the thing that humbles you.
Why It Matters
At Anahat, we believe mythology isn’t behind us — it’s within us.
Kadali Vana is the story we tell ourselves less often: that strength meets its limit, that the centre is layers and not stone, that giving once completely is a whole and finished life.
Not everything is meant to be conquered.
Some things are meant to be walked into.
