Khusar Pusar (Gossip)

The Story

Behind the Kalighat temple in old Calcutta, the patuas painted fast.

Cheap paper, a few pigments, a brush that never lifted. They made images for pilgrims — gods, mostly. But between the gods they painted something else: the fat babu with his mistress. The priest and the scandal that swallowed a city. The wife with the upper hand.

These were not devotional pictures. They were the news. Painted overnight, sold at the temple gate, passed hand to hand.

The Kalighat pat was gossip with a brush.

Painted in the flat gold and burnt red of the Bengal patachitra tradition — bold contour, no shading, no wasted line. Everything the patua would have used, on a form he would have recognised.

Why It Matters

Scripture is what we call gossip once it’s old enough.
